RATIONALE

Everyone negotiates however women have unique challenges in negotiation especially in developing countries! Women do bring several advantages to the negotiating table, including the ability to consider both the substantive as well as relationship benefits of any deal despite the prevailing barriers and obstacles.

This workshop focuses on the unique challenges women face, how women can develop negotiating strengths and thus use power more constructively to secure win-win agreements for their organizations and nations.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

qTo enhance awareness of the scope of negotiations within the organizational, national and global environment; 
qTo emphasise the significance, principles and technique of negotiations as a core competence for all women, leaders, managers and professionals in the organisation at all levels of their professional engagements;
qTo understand better the concepts, principles, process, elements and techniques of principled negotiations;
qTo be more alert to the challenges, barriers and pitfalls during negotiations;
qTo provide opportunities for the participants to examine their own strengths and weaknesses as negotiators, and the unique challenges they may face as women and to develop  a personal  action plan for skill-enhancement;
qTo upgrade negotiations skills through practice in simulation exercises;
qTo provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This workshop is designed as a skill-enhancement workshop for senior women leaders, professionals and managers. This women include those who are directly or indirectly involved in negotiations at the organisational, national or international level. This includes current negotiators or those who are soon to assume positions that may require them to negotiate actively or take leadership roles.

Arusha is a city surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Beautifully situated at the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Kilimanjaro.

FACILITATOR

Shanta Nagendram has conducted training for all sectors in more than 32 countries. She has been appointed as the lead consultant for building capacity in negotiations and leadership training by several organisations including the Commonwealth Secretariat, European Union and Institute of International Education (IIE USA) and by several governments, companies and civil society organisations. Shanta obtained her B. Economics (Hons.) from the University of Malaya and her M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics & Political Science. She was also a Fulbright Scholar and has participated in both the Basic and Advanced Negotiations workshops at the Harvard Law School. Her expertise is leadership and women’s empowerment.

Workshop Overview:

The supervisors play an important role in the organization. In the current competitive business environment, supervisors are under pressure to maintain the momentum and make a difference in their work. This will be possible only when the supervisors possess the right skills. This five-day workshop is designed to provide the participants with techniques and skills to enhance their effectiveness as supervisors.

The trainer will use a variety of training methods, including small group discussions, individual reflection, group sharing exercises, case studies, and work related role-play.
